As the new year approaches, it’s important to take notice of how internet marketing has progressed over the last year, and will continue to progress in the years to come. Your digital marketing strategy should be much easier to narrow down thanks to certain limitations that the continuous Google updates have placed on marketers. 

However, though they are limitations, they are not necessarily bad. Quite the contrary, the constant “tweaking” of the Google algorithms has done nothing but ensure that those marketers that abide by the rules and follow ethical, white hat strategies will prevail, while those that attempt to manipulate their rankings without focusing on the customer, are doomed to fail. 

That is what marketing is about anyway, right? Focusing on the consumer’s needs and not trying to find loopholes to “game” the system. Anyway, here are the top 10 marketing strategies that will help your business to flourish in 2014. 

Content, Content, Content – Not just a lot of content, but high quality content. We know this is one of the most important factors in ranking a website now and looks as if it will only become more important as time progresses. 

Social Proof – If you want to sell a product, you need to show proof from unbiased, third party sources that it actually works. That means written testimonials, Facebook “Likes,” Amazon Customer Reviews, Youtube video testimonials, etc. People do not always trust businesses, but they will trust the opinion of others about your business even if they have never met that person. Weird, huh?

Going Mobile – Ensure that you have a mobile, responsive theme. Focusing more efforts on mobile marketing may pay off big time in the next year. If trends continue, mobile marketing may someday take over internet marketing completely. There’s nothing wrong with getting your feet wet and trying to reach customers via their mobile. 

Scale and Automate – I am all for Scale and Automation. It is the cornerstone of a lot of our niche businesses. However, automate the right way. Automation that looks terrible (for example, scraping articles) just does not work. Be smart and you will see fantastic results.

Social Media Marketing – This past year Facebook made their platform much easier for marketers to reach their target consumers. Look for this to continue. Also note that Google has been showing signs that they do heavily favor social signals when ranking. Only when your business is established will you be able to outsource all of the work. Until then, outsource what you can, while focusing your main efforts on progressing the business.

Forget Link Building – Well, don’t completely forget it, but focus your efforts on bringing value to your consumers and they will create all of the backlinks that you will ever need. Happy customers are always happy to spread the word about your service. 

Youtube – Youtube videos are becoming big for internet marketers. Not so much for SEO purposes, but for brand awareness and snagging traffic, Youtube works just as well, if not better than most other methods. 

Identify Key Players – Who are the head honchos within your niche? Reach out to them for ideas, guest blog posts, interviews, etc. You will be surprised at how quickly a message can go viral if it’s from the right person. 

Research, Research, Research – Though this is nothing new, it is still important to list. Find out who your target audience is, interact with them in order to discover what their needs are, and then present them with the solution. This narrowing of your search will help save a lot of time, money, and effort in the long run. There are more tools available everyday that will help narrow your searches down. 

Being as Transparent as Possible – It is ok to let consumers know of your motives. You should be so confident of your product/service that you can openly share that you would like them to purchase it and the reasons as to why.
