In the last 2 blog posts, I covered how to properly set up your email copy and formatting in order to yield ridiculous gains in revenue. Today, I am going to give you specific methods that will help you build your list to the max.
After all, every person that signs up is a new prospect that has shown interest in your niche. These are targeted, potential consumers that you can market your product or services to through email over and over again.
Let’s get started…
#1 Create a Free Member’s Only Area
If a viewer is deriving enough value from the content that is viewable on your site, it would only make sense to them that there would be added value in signing up for a private area.
People are naturally curious and will generally jump at the chance to be part of something that provides information that is only privy to certain people (in this case it is those that sign up).
Though anyone can sign up, there is a certain level of exclusivity that one feels as being a “member” as opposed to being just another viewer. The more privileged a consumer feels for having access to a product or service, the more the added level of mystique will help sell the idea of signing up.
Plus, people WANT access to your information and will be willing to offer up their email in order to obtain it. Of course this only works if you actually provide additional value for your newly obtained members.
Everything from video courses to additional blog posts or guides can add to the appeal of signing up.
Quite possibly the most powerful option for creating a membership site is the WishList Member plugin. It allows users to create multiple tiered levels for your site.
#2 Build Trust through Quality Work
Obviously this applies to everything you do in IM, but you’d be surprised at how many people choose to adopt an attitude of quantity over quality when it comes to content. Yes, this approach may bring you results within the SERP’s as the more content you have, the higher the likelihood someone will see it.
The only problem is; how do you plan on converting this traffic to sales if you are attracting them with low quality work? Though Google’s intent is to provide the highest quality information for every search, there are plenty of poorly constructed sites with even worse content that still rank relatively high.
Though these sites may attract a ton of clicks, it’s hardly likely that readers view them as authorities. Viewers will not sign up and are even less likely to return.
Only the sites with high quality, deeply researched content will gain the trust and admiration of its readers and convince them to hand over their precious email address.
Pro Tip: once they’ve joined your list, it is not time to slack. Emails should be relevant and provide additional information instead of just containing a few brief sentences and a link. Give your audience a reason to look forward to your emails.
#3 Place Sign Up Forms On Your Most Popular Pages
A fellow marketer by the name of Pat Flynn noticed that his most viewed page was not for his podcast or even for his blog posts.
His most viewed page was actually his “About Me” page. Despite already having an opt in form located on the sidebar of every page, Pat decided to try something new in order to take advantage of the massive traffic that was viewing this one page.
So, being the savvy entrepreneur that he is, Pat added a sign up form right in the middle of the page! After about a month, he saw an increase of 446% more emails coming from that page.
#4 Gain Subscribers from Your Comment Section
Whenever someone leaves a comment on a post they are required to provide their email address as well. Why not offer an option that allows the reader to easily leave their comment and sign up for your list at the same time?
A nifty plugin I came across fully integrates with Aweber, and allows viewers to leave a comment while simultaneously signing up for your list. This plugin is none other than the Aweber Web Form Plugin.
When used correctly, it will provide a small check box at the bottom of the comments section. If the box is checked and the viewer submits their comment, the plugin will automatically add them to your email list.
#5 Give Away Cool Stuff on Facebook
I’ve written about the astonishing power that building a massive Facebook following can have on an online business numerous times but have yet to really elaborate on how to properly leverage your following for ridiculous profits.
One of the most amazing features that Facebook offers business owners is the ability to provide contests and free giveaways to your followers. Facebook has rather strict rules when it comes to giveaways, so here are a few basic practices that seem to work the best.
- Offer something awesome (this should be a no brainer)
- Create a large picture that explains the basics of the promotion
- Require a comment or a “like”
- Provide a thorough explanation of the rules including the start and end dates
- Pin the post at the very top of your page for added visibility
- The use of an app can allow you to collect sign ups (which should be required for entry) or to increase the overall size of the post for even more visibility
Announce the winner everywhere; not just Facebook, but all of your social media accounts and on your blog as well. This will show others that your contests are legit and may prompt those that follow you on other social media sites to follow you on Facebook and eventually sign up for your future promotions.
Last but not least, as the winner for a testimonial of the gift you provided in order to show those that may have been hesitant to join your last promotion, that you are actually giving away some fantastic information.
Protip: Facebook’s TOS prohibits the use of “shares” for giveaways. Meaning, you cannot require your followers to “share” your post in order to qualify for the giveaway.
#6 Link to a Squeeze Page Instead of Your Blog
Obviously everyone wants viewers to see their site. Most also want the backlinks pointing towards their site.
Instead of linking directly to your homepage, you can link Youtube videos and infographics to your squeeze page. Why Youtube videos and infographics specifically? They provide valuable information to the potential consumer, letting them know that you are in fact an authority, and are also the most likely to go viral.
A simple link at the bottom of video or a url on an infographic can do absolute wonders for your list.
If you follow the ideas I’ve provided above and the tips from the past 2 blog posts relating to the set up of your emails, you will have a full proof plan for converting your web traffic into paying consumers time and time again.
