Twitter is an amazing tool and they are constantly making changes to the Twitter.com interface to streamline how it works and to make it an easier experience for chrome.
However, there are some features that are missing that can make twittering a royal pain in the backside. If you are using an interface to Twitter like Tweetdeck or tweeting from your Iphone, these apps have figured out a lot of the problems for you. However, if you are using the website, then you may find it a bit cumbersome.
For example, to RT (Retweet) a post, you have to copy the tweet, give the credit, shorten the tweet if needed, and send it. Another situation I get all the time is people telling me, “they liked a tweet” or they ask me a question about a tweet I posted and I have no idea which tweet they are referring to. Has this happened to you too? Well, I have the perfect solution and it is bloody amazing and has made my Twitter experience so much smoother.
So How do We Get You to Twitter Nirvana?
Basically what we are going to do is install a special script for the Firefox browser that changes the interface around on Twitter to help you get the most out of it. It’s going to add some new “Easy Button” features such as:
- Nested Replies – Makes it a lot easier to follow conversations
- Custom Search Tabs – Great for following specific topics quickly
- Autocomplete – Saves a lot of time
- Pagination – This makes looking through all the tweets a lot easier
- RT Button – My favorite feature
- Media Embed – Watch linked YouTube videos and view pictures right in Twitter
- URL Expansion – See behind those shortlinks and see where you are being sent
- Hash Tag Search Links – A nice feature to follow trends and popular topics
- Social Links – Makes sharing a lot easier when you stumble on something cool
- Friend Icons – Tell at a glance if a user is following you or not
We are going to use a special plugin and script that only works in FireFox at the moment and if you need to download it, you can get it here, it is my browser of choice and it is well worth the switch if you are using Twitter a lot like I do.
So Lets Go Through This Step by Step
Step 1 – Go Get The Greasemonkey Addon
Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748 and install the Greasemonkey addon. This is a really cool little system that allows you to install custom scripts that enhance your experience on different website among other things. Installing this plugin will require that you restart your browser so make sure you do that before proceeding to step 2.
Step 2 – Go Get Troynt’s Twitter Script
Go to http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/40617 and press the “INSTALL” button. This will then pop up a window to confirm what you are installing. Just hit the “Install” button on the popup and it will install the script automatically.
Step 3 – Configuring the Options
This is the easiest part. If you look in the top right hand corner of your browser when you are on Twitter, you will see a new section called “Troynt’s Settings”. Once you click that you will see all the options you can enable and disable. I would post a pic of this options section but it is kind of long. All the options are pretty self explanatory such as checkboxes for “URL Expansion”, etc.
Step 4 – Your All Done, Happy Tweeting
Now you can sit back and tweet that much easier. The script is regularly updated and if there is an update, Greasemonkey will let you know. Have fun!
